I would like to read you slow pages,
feel the warm trickle of ink
gently engaging in summer enchantments;
taste the musk of old spells now softly
transforming into new skin.
I would like to sing slow songs of lust
and trust these thin parchments
to shake off the dust and dip
into the melting wax and move through

Caught between the stony banks
the river now flows meekly
to whatever sea awaits it.
It bears the sun, the mist, the rain
as it endures without complaint
the lonely angler in his boat
and the fat merchant ships,
transporting coal across the world.
It flows without comment or speculation.
But once, beset by some dark fever,
its placid waters rose
and broke its stone confinements.

My hand still rests on the dark-grey stone
of the railing of Charles bridge,
while my shadow runs from the timid light
of the lamps that sway in the wind.
And the statues grow dark now
and move into shadow;
the river is covered in moon-silver slices
and tendrils of soft-moving mist.
And you hold me there
to the heart of song;
